About this course

A complete starting point for anyone who has never touched a piano. In four short lessons you go from not knowing where the notes are to playing a recognisable melody with both hands. No previous musical experience is assumed, and no ability to read music is required — you learn that here.

The course is built the way lessons run at Voloshka Music Academy: small steps, no grades, and progress measured against where you were last week rather than against anyone else.

Who it is for

  • Complete beginners of any age, from around seven years old upward.
  • Parents who want to sit at the instrument alongside their child.
  • Adults returning after a long break who want to rebuild the basics properly.

What you will be able to do by the end

  • Find any note on the keyboard instantly, without counting.
  • Sit and hold your hands in a way that stays comfortable for long practice.
  • Read and count basic rhythm — whole, half, quarter and eighth notes.
  • Play a five-finger melody with each hand separately.
  • Play a simple melody with a bass line, using both hands together.

What you need

Any piano or keyboard with at least 49 keys. Weighted keys are better but not necessary at this stage. A bench or chair at the right height, and ten to fifteen quiet minutes a day.

How to work through it

Do not rush. Each lesson is designed for about a week of practice. Play slowly enough that every note comes out even and controlled — speed arrives on its own once accuracy is there. If anything starts to ache, stop and check your posture: discomfort is always a sign of position, never a sign that you need to try harder.
